Do You Know Why People Fail At Affiliate Marketing?

Did someone tell you affiliate marketing would make you big bucks very quickly? They lied. There is a lot to learn if you want to be successful in this field. A large percentage of people who start out never make it. Do you know why people fail at affiliate marketing?

Here is a truth you need to learn right now. Affiliate marketing is not fast; it is not easy; and not everyone can make a success of it. Even those who are successful have failed more times than they have succeeded, as have most successful business owners.

Please realize that there is no stigma in failure. The failure is just part of the journey toward success. Use your failure as a learning experience, not as an excuse to give up. If you have failed, you are that much closer to success.

What Do You Expect From The Opportunity?

There are a number of reasons why people fail, so let’s look at them. First of all, what led you to your interest in a particular company? Were you diagram of how affiliate marketing workspromised quick success? Many of these “opportunities” are offered by people who are simply trying to market their product.

With these companies, once you join you learn of all the things you weren’t told ahead of time, like upsells you have to buy if you want the system to work. Perhaps there are other requirements you must meet. Maybe you have to make a huge financial investment, in advertising, for example. Such situations can make you feel discouraged very quickly.

Don’t Fall For The Shiny Object Syndrome

This is the person who jumps from one money-making method to another, or who tries a new scheme, and when that one doesn’t work, simply gives up. It is easy to get discouraged when you just scratch the surface and than decide it’s not for you. Find one method and stick to it until you win.

You Need To Be Passionate About Your Business Choice

If the plan you have chosen does not fire your passion, perhaps you need to change to something else. You truly need to be passionate about your business. You need to learn to love to write and create new websites. You will do best if you love every aspect of your business.

Can you work really hard for at least six months to a year in the hopes that you will get paid eventually? If you really love what you are doing, the time you put in will not deter you. If you don’t like what you are doing, perhaps you should find something else.

Do You Have A Plan For The Development Of Your Business?

Every step of the way in your business, you need a plan. First, you need to research everything you can find that relates to your specific business. You may have selected a great training course, but you can’t expect to automatically build a business that is successful.

The best way to learn is to simply start doing the business. If you take a course and fail, you can learn something from that failure and try again. Consider these failures part of your research into what works best.

Don’t Assume Affiliate Marketing Is Your Most Profitable Choice

Don’t expect you will start making money right away. Give yourself at least a year; than your sales should slowly increase. By the two to five-year mark you should be making some decent money. Just as in a brick-and-mortar business, you need to allow time for the necessary growth before profits start rolling in.

Affiliate marketing is not something you can turn into a profitable venture right away. It is a long-term business.

Diversify: Don’t Put All Your Eggs In One Basket

Don’t rely on only one source, such as Google, for website traffic. Within your first five years of business, you need to try to have two or three sites that draw traffic through a variety of sources. Besides Google, you should affiliate marketing/social media signgain some traffic from paid advertising, social media, and other traffic sources.

Consider diversifying by developing your own products and services. Then you will be making money not just on other people’s products, but on your own as well.

How Can You Avoid The Pitfalls?

First, affiliate marketing is not easy. Though it is not complicated, it takes time and effort. You need the right tools and the correct strategies.

Most people leave affiliate marketing once they realize this is not a way to get-rich-quick. Many fail just because they have a fear of failure. They do not realize that failure is often an important step toward success.

You need to make sure you create your brand and than give it context and credibility. Then, when you gain traffic leads, make sure you keep up a conversation by contacting them through email with effective content. Don’t just push one product after another.

If you are using ads and they are not creating content that converts, change your technique. You will lose money if you keep promoting an idea that is not selling.

Track your progress. Monitor the data you receive from the places where you promote your product. Know what works, and expand on that.

Be real. Don’t lease a fancy car or rent a sumptuous residence just to make you look successful. Instead, you should be offering your audience something that meets a need they have or solves a problem for them.

It’s good to build an email list of contacts, because than you have your list, no matter what.

If you can, find a product that you really like that is not being promoted by every vendor in the business. Realize, too, that vendors can come and go. While you may be having great success with a product, if the vendor closes his doors, you will be out of luck.

If you can find vendors you can work with, so you will know what is going on with them, that is helpful. However, it is wise to find similar products from more than one vendor, so if one goes out of business or stops carrying that product, you can cover with another vendor.

Don’t feel like affiliate marketing is over saturated. Too many people start and fail because they don’t have the time or patience it takes to be successful. Everyone wants to make a fast buck. Instead, try providing benefits to others. You will be much more successful.

Keep in mind that affiliate marketing will work. You must give it enough time and be patient as you develop your business. Failure is temporary. Consider it a learning experience and move on ahead. If you want your business to work, the most important thing is not to give up.

It takes time and patience to succeed, so for goodness’ sake, don’t quit too soon. You might be on the verge of a breakthrough. If you give up, you will never know.

  1. So I am in search of making money online and was wondering the reasons why people make money and why people don’t.  In your experience is there a great way to make money without having to spend tons of money?  I mean some of those get rich quick sites to seem like they cost a lot of money upfront and then you see the reviews and regret spending the money.  When did you say it can take up to a year to make money how are you making it anyways?  Do you have to go to the businesses and ask to tell others about the website you have made?  It is a really interesting looking idea that you have but not sure if I could make it work.  I look forward to the answers and thank you for the great info you gave me already.

    • Being successful online does not take a lot of money to get started, if you find the right opportunity.  From my experience online, I believe that Wealthy Affiliate is the best company to join because it does not cost a great deal and there is potential for success.

I think the “potential” part is up to you.  Once you start, you need to prepare to take some time to build a website that will make you money. It doesn’t happen overnight — you have to work at it.  The most important things to remember are to stay focused, keep moving forward, even if slowly, and DON’T QUIT.

If you follow Wealthy Afflliate training every step of the way you will learn exactly what to do, one step at a time.  Just know that you need to give it time.

  2. Hi Fran. This is truly motivational. I have seen so many persons fail and end up giving up; I have seen a few fail several times, they keep pressing and now they are very successful with their online business. Affiliate Marketing requires a lot of learning, hardwork, strategies and skills; knowing all these and working towards all of these with consistency and diligently will lead to success. I have decided not to run after shinny objects anymore, I have decided not to follow short cuts that will eventually put a big hole in my pocket. I have decided to pay the sacrifices involved in Affiliate Marketing: Learning and Hardwork.

    Regards!

    • You have made good decisions, and they should help you on to success.

Failure is not bad as long as you get up and try again.  You can learn from your failures.  That is one part of your learning process in this business.  Short cuts can lead to derailment.  You are wise to do the full meal deal.  Your attitude sounds to me like a winning one, so just keep it as you move forward, and don’t give up.  You can do this!

Too often, we approach something new with the wrong expectations.  We give up too soon.  We don’t look far enough down the road at the potential there is for us.  I believe a great mantra to have for internet marketing is “I will never give up.”

    • Ryan, you are so welcome.  It is true that too many people start in affiliate marketing because they have the wrong idea that it will make you money quickly.  If you start out with that idea, it won’t take you long to get discouraged and give up.  Affiliate marketing is like any other business you start — there is a learning curve that you must encompass before you really know how  your business works.

If you can stick with it long enough, affiliate marketing can fund your dreams.  You do have to work for it.

  5. Hi Fran

You talk a lot of sense with this article but the major problem is that people in general are impatient. We want results yesterday and if we do not get it, we become disheartened and eventually they quit. If you are not frightened to fail then you will not get discouraged when things do not go your way. You need to ride the rough times as well as you do when the going is easy. You need to carry on, as with perseverance anything is possible but only possible if you carry on. You need to learn from your mistakes  and try new things when things are not going your way. You can be your own worse enemy.

You only get success through your many failures. What do you do when you lack motivation?

    Thanks

    Antonio

    • You speak truth.  It’s up to you to see the project through to success.

When you lack motivation, that’s crucial.  Take some time to think through exactly why you started the business.  Write down your goal, if you haven’t done so, and think of how badly you want it.  If you don’t feel that burning desire to achieve it, perhaps you should find a new goal.  It takes really wanting to achieve something to have the motivation to carry on.
