If You Are A Senior, Can You Make Money Online?

There comes a time when your age denies you access to the many employment opportunities available to you when you were younger. You may have fallen victim to something called “ageism,” which is discrimination toward you because of your age. Many doors once open will now be closed to you. You might ask yourself, as a senior, can you make money online?

If this is your experience, can you start over and live a brand new career on the internet despite your age?

Yes, you can. In this post, you will learn why the internet is your perfect opportunity. Here are factors to consider:

1) The internet is a level playing field

2 older people studying computerThe beautiful thing about online work is that age is not a factor. It does not matter how old you are. If you are still mentally sharp, have a computer and access to the internet, you can start an online endeavor and turn it into a very profitable business.

2) You don’t have to leave home to go to work

Do all your work from the comfort of your home. Establish whatever hours you want. Work in your pajamas, if you wish. You are your own boss, so you set the rules.

3) You don’t need a lot of money to start

If you search the online opportunities carefully, you can find some that do not involve a lot of cash to start. Here is where you need to research well. Be aware that there are many scams online that sound too good to be true, and chances are, they are just that.

Don’t fall for the hype. So, how do you know when you find the right opportunity — the one that resonates with you and fits your particular experience and interest? Research it fully. Read many reviews and see what other people think of the company you are investigating.

Allow me to use myself as an example. I actually have two strikes against me. First, I am 81. Second, I live in a remote area of Alaska. Nevertheless, I have been working with the same company for over a year, have two websites, and am starting to earn some money for my efforts.

Old hands, clasped on table

On the internet, the sky is the limit. Once you have your website up and running, your marketplace is the world. It does not matter what your age and location. If you offer something your audience wants, you will be successful.

According to Google, the United States Department of Commerce estimates consumers spent $513.61 billion online in 2018. Total retail sales increased to 3.63 trillion online in 2018. Those figures continue to grow. There is enough money there to guarantee a future internet market. Why not make some of it for yourself?

4) Use your own experience to create an online business

Think about your strengths. What gifts of knowledge have you collected? What lessons from your years of experience can serve you well when starting a new business?

There are many ways to make money online. The method I have chosen is called affiliate marketing. I like this way of making money because I can choose how to construct my business, according to my experience and strengths.

Affiliate marketing is a great way to start a business without much money. In this business model, you first build a website, then choose your niche, or area of expertise, and link to companies that sell products that fit your niche. You advertise their product, provide visitors with a link to that item, and if someone clicks the link and buys the item, you receive a commission.

There are many affiliate marketing companies out there. The one I have chosen is called Wealthy Affiliate. I am sold on it for many reasons. One of the most important is the amount of training available to you to teach you how to build your websites and your business. You will learn everything you need to know to be successful.

5) Take all the time needed to establish your new online venture

As we grow older, we sometimes slow down. Some days we seem to have lots of energy. Then we can move forward at a good pace. On other days, perhaps we struggle with physical problems, or we just feel too tired to do much.

Never fear — if you need time to rest, with a business online your schedule is your own. Take all the time you need and then go back to work on your project with renewed energy.

It is good to be moving toward a goal, or a dream, because you can add older couple and younger man studying computeryears to your life by feeling the excitement and stimulation of something new. Just because you have lived a long time doesn’t mean your life is over. To the contrary, as an elder, you have wisdom learned from experience to share with all those who are younger than you.

6) Make a difference, no matter your age

Having lived for a lot of years, you have acquired knowledge of many things. You may have creative ideas you have never had the chance to explore. Now you have a vehicle with which you can have an effect on society. Now is your chance to shine.

Make a difference in the world. Use your wisdom to expand the collective knowledge of your time on earth. Use your ideas to grow an online structure that will help not only you, but the people it touches. Think of all you have received in your life, and give back, making yourself useful to those who follow you.

7) You will be better equipped to function in a tech-oriented world

More and more seniors are learning to use the internet. Their fear of this new technology fades as they begin to learn how to use it. As technology in the world is not going away, but will most likely become more complex as time passes, learning the internet will help keep you in the loop.

No need to have a “fallen by the wayside” status. By learning to conduct business online, you conquer the fear of its newness, and you learn how it works. This knowledge will be increasingly useful to you as the world becomes even more complicated. You will be able to follow the flow of progress and not be left far behind.

If you are a senior reading this post, know that you can use your life experience to make a difference in the world. I do suggest you look into affiliate marketing, as it has the features you need for a painless startup. You can join an affiliate company no matter your age; you can select a niche that resonates with your own experience; you can build a business that will help both you and others.

It does not have to cost you much. With the proper training, you can gather the followers you will need to make the business grow. I have written a post that outlines the details of starting your business using Wealthy Affiliate. A great thing is that you can get started for free.

Thanks to the internet, I feel I’ve found a way to do just that.

  1. Yes, you can. Today, seniors have access to internet and technology like everyone else. Find a user friendly platform that can reach your audience and use that. Seniors got experience, many can write well and the silver market is also a big one. Many are already shopping online, therefore they can also make money online. The factors you provided all makes sense and are considerations for any senior snaking this question.

    • I have certainly found it to be beneficial to me.  It doesn’t matter how old I am — no one asks or cares — if I can build a website, fine, I can have at it and try to make it a success.

It is so fine that there is such a thing as the internet to allow us older folks a chance to be creative and make a contribution.  I am very happy to be involved in such a venture.
