What Is The Importance Of Backlinks?

A backlink is created by one website linking to another. These links can also be called “inbound” or “incoming” links. So, what is the importance of backlinks to your site?

Backlinks are important to SEO, because they show a “vote of confidence” when another site links to yours. They become a signal to search engines that others vouch for the quality of your content.links of chain

Of late, some sources are saying that link building is diminishing in importance. Not so, according to Neil Patel.

He says they remain a vital quality ranking sign for the search engines. Moz.com did a study of 27,000 competitive keywords, and in the course of the study, found that almost all those web pages that ranked high had an external, high-quality link pointing to their site.

These days, writing useful content without building links is not the best strategy, as there are over four million posts published each day.

It is worth understanding how the variety, quality, and quantity of natural links can affect your website’s ranking. Earning backlinks has become an essential component of off-site SEO. This process of obtaining such links is referred to as link earning or link building.

The most desirable backlinks to earn are those from trustworthy, popular, high-authority sites. Earning these links can be time-consuming. If you have a new site you can find it difficult to start.

Look at a competitor’s site. Examine the links they have received from other sites. You can learn about how the link building may have helped them. Try Link Explorer, a backlink tool, to help uncover these links. Then you can target these same domains as you run your link-building campaign.

The best backlinks are both authoritative and relevant to your site. Create Sign: SEOand promote your best content to the right group of authoritative websites as part of your campaign. One of my references said, “If SEO were a song, backlinks would be the chorus.” So, we need to close the gap between knowing backlinks are important and knowing how to gain quality authoritative ones.

There are a couple of kinds of links: Contextual and non-contextual.

The contextual is a link that is surrounded by text. These links are most valuable for several reasons:

  1. They are related directly to the content that surrounds them
  2. They allow users to expand their knowledge base of a topic easily
  3. They give you the chance to use valuable keywords as anchor text
  4. Because Google understands this process, they will place more value on contextual links

Internal contextual links (those that link to another page of the website) are useful because they can increase the amount of pages viewed by the visitor. Thus, they increase the amount if time the visitor spends on the page and decreases the bounce rate.

Though they do not garner the same value as an external backlink, Google still gives them some value.

A non-contextual link could be to something like an online directory or perhaps in a content roundup. Because they are less specific, they have less value than a contextual link.

Google periodically changes its algorhythms. One such major algorhythm was directly related to backlinks. It is called the Panda Update.

In the Panda update, it was stated that counting citations or backlinks to a given page gives some approximation of the page’s importance or quality.

They went on to say that intuitively, pages can have a high PageRank if there are many pages pointing to it, and that pages well-cited from around the web are worth looking at.

In other words, backlinks to a given page can be compared to votes. If aSign: backlinks website is linked to an outside resource, it is voting for the reliability of that resource.

Before the Panda Update, webmasters got their site on as many online directories as possible. SEO companies were paid to fabricate spam links from link farms (these are a group of websites where each links to all the others in the group)

Until Google discovered what was going on, these methods and other link scams allowed websites to gain thousands of backlinks.

When Google released the Panda Update in 2011, one of the many changes in SEO was to penalize websites with undeserved links.

With this update, Google shifted emphasis to backlinks of quality, rather than quantity. New web builders could not cheat the system by adding many poor-quality backlinks.

From Google Panda also came improvements to Google’s PageRank algorhythm. With PageRank, Google put in place a way to assess the SEO weight of a backlink, based on its importance and quality.

Now, links from more authoritative, well-established websites would create a greater effect on SEO.

In 2015, Google announced the RankBrain algorhythm. Though RankBrain centers mostly around adjusting source rankings around specific user experience, it also affects the importance of backlinks.

Because Google Panda canceled the effectiveness of link farms and other link scams, now link-building had to focus on the creation of quality content that would appeal to internet authority sites.

Now, link-builders must be even more creative and relevant with link-building methods. It is important to put more effort into researching content topics and link sources to more effective lead to seeing SEO improvements.

To clarify the kind of links you need, there are four types of backlinks that Neil Patel says you do not want:

  1. Low-quality article directory submission web pages
  2. Links from spammy websites, irrelevant reciprocal links, or automated outreach emails (These can also raise a red flag to Google)
  3. Thousands of automatically generated links (Don’t buy the Fiverr programs which promise you 10,000 backlinks.
  4. Paid links that generate brand awareness

One strategy you can use to help grow your backlinks is by doing guest posting. If you guest blog on an authority website, you can help build your Sign: Guest bloggingbrand image, as your brand growth is pivotal to your blog’s growth. Consider guest posting as a great way to build your image.

For great exposure and for increasing the perceived value of your site, social media marketing is important. You will make your brand more visible, and this in turn will increase your domain authority, improve SEO, and help you earn a high page rank.

Internal linking helps improve your overall SEO, because it distributes “link juice” throughout your entire site.

There are some comprehensive guides online that will teach you the most effective ways to build backlinks. Two of these guides can be found in my list of references at the end of this post. Look at the post by Neil Patel and the one from Moz.com. You will find a great deal of information on these two sites.

I wish you luck in learning how to build effective backlinks. I’ll be right there, learning along with you. In this business, there is always something more to learn.
