What Is The Importance Of Gratitude In Life?

What is the importance of gratitude in life? It is not an attitude, but is something that flows from you. True gratitude occurs when you are overwhelmed with something that you are thankful for.

If you were starving and someone offered you food, you might be extremely grateful for that act of kindness. Everything in your life is working together to keep you alive and well.

If you look carefully at everything that is happening in your life, you could be filled with gratitude for all the people and things that have helped you.

Sadhguru Jaggi Vasudev, a South Indian yogi and mystic, made a statement about the importance of being grateful for our food: “The food that you eat is life. It is other forms of life that we are eating — the other forms of lives are giving up their life to sustain our life.

If you can eat with enormous gratitude for all the living things which give up their life to sustain our lives, then the food will behave in a very different way within you.”

Learn to receive gratefully. Though taking without permission or by force is ugly, receiving is very important. Look at the aspects of your life. You receive so much every day.

For example, if you wear a cotton shirt, be aware that many people were involved in making that shirt. Someone planted the cotton seed. Various organisms helped it grow, and many people prepared the cotton, from ginning to weaving to spinning.

Then someone made the shirt and someone sold it. Many lives have participated in producing that shirt. Receive all these things gracefully, and let your gratitude flow.

Start A Gratitude Journal

From https://www.happierhuman.com/benefits-of-gratitude comes the following information:

It is important to look at your life and think about all the things you are grateful for. To reinforce this habit, start a gratitude journal. You can write in it daily or weekly.

Start easy and write three or four things for which you are grateful. You can add more as you go along. Here’s an example: You can be grateful to be alive; to have a warm house and a place to sleep, and food to eat.

Your journal is not like a grocery list. but should be a reflection of where you are at the present moment. Write it down and think about it before you go to sleep. It is not necessary to write different things each day. If you wish, you can repeat items on your list more than once.

My suggestion is that you write in your journal a few minutes each night before you go to bed. Tests show that doing so can increase your long-term well-being by more than 10%. The impact that this action will make on your life is the same as you would have if you doubled your income.

Not only that, but gratitude can help you sleep better. Before bed, thinking about a few things you are grateful for today will induce relaxation and you will fall asleep more quickly.

Gratitude can change your life.

There are so many benefits to the practice. For starters, it will make you happier. Though you may only feel a small bit of gratitude during your five-minute journaling, the emotions of gratitude felt are enough to trigger a grateful mood.

Cultivating gratitude is a skill. It will take some time for you to be able to self-generate feelings of gratitude and happiness on demand. Over time, the intensity and duration of the feelings will increase.

Be aware that gratitude is a personality trait. For some people, it is easier to express it than for others. With daily practice, you can change your personality to a more grateful one, but it will take time.

When you cultivate gratitude, you become nicer, more trusting, and more appreciative. Thus, it helps you make more friends and deepens relationships.

Research findings show that gratitude makes you healthier, and can extend your life by a few months or even years.

Your emotions become more positive when you are grateful. Feelings of envy are reduced, memories are happier, and you bounce back faster from stress.

When you are grateful you are more optimistic. The optimism in itself makes you happier and healthier. If you see good in your present life, you are more apt to believe your future life will be good as well.

When you develop a grateful and compassionate attitude, you find that material success is not a very important factor in your happiness. With gratitude, you are less apt to compare yourselves to those with a higher income.

Gratitude Is Related To Spiritualism

There is a close connection between gratitude and spiritualism. There are two reasons for this:

  1. Major religions all believe gratitude to be a virtue
  2. If you are spiritual, you will tend to show grateful behavior

When you are grateful, you become less self-centered. The reason is because gratitude by its very nature allows you to focus on others. This attitude also will help increase your self-esteem.

Why? Because studies show that grateful people are kinder and friendlier. Because such people are more apt to be liked and appreciated, they are more likely to receive help from others.

Stay Healthy With a Positive Attitude

Positive emotion improves health. To put it simply, many research studies show that if you want to improve your health, improve your mind.

Because gratitude is a positive emotion, it can help generate faster recovery from medical procedures and positive changes in the immune system.

One way gratitude improves health is that it reduces stress levels. People engaging in gratitude practices have been shown to feel less pain and to need less doctor visits. Large studies have shown that there is a strong correlation between gratitude and vitality.

Grateful People Are Vigorous

Grateful people are much more likely to have physical and mental vigor. These people are also much more apt to cope in times of stress. They are more resilient.

When you experience gratitude in the present, you are much more likely to remember positive memories. Such experience can transform some neutral or negative memories to positive ones. Sometimes a grateful mood can help you find closure of upsetting memories that still haunt you.

The attitude of envy and one of gratitude are largely incompatible. Remember, it is almost impossible to feel optimism and pessimism at the same time.

Gratitude can help you relax. Both gratitude and positive emotions are known to be among the strongest relaxants around. It may be even more effective as a relaxation method than deep breathing.

Gratitude Enhances Social Behavior

Studies show that gratitude induces pro-social behavior. If you keep a gratitude journal, you are more likely to help others with their problems. You will also be more apt to offer them emotional support.

Since gratitude is regarded as a virtue, by being grateful you also look good. Ingratitude is regarded universally with contempt. It is not the same thing as positive gratitude sloganweakness — this is flattery or subservience.

Those who are more grateful are more likely to help others. They are also more apt to participate in a mentoring relationship.

Gratitude Helps You Achieve Goals

Want to increase your goal achievement? In one study, participants were told to write down the goals they wished to reach within the next two months. Those who kept a gratitude journal reported more progress in achieving their goals.

Gratitude can make you more productive, because you are less apt to be bogged down in worries. As gratitude is shown to increase self-esteem and reduce insecurity, it can help you focus and be more productive.

I hope that you find some value from this discussion of gratitude. There are so many ways that it can be helpful to you. Think about your life and the many things you can be grateful for.

I suggest you try the gratitude journal for 30 days and see what changes you bring to your life. If you appreciate your results, try for another 30 days.

    • Thank you for your comment, Kaju. Yes, we need to be grateful for all the good in our lives. I am using the technique of finding a half-dozen (at least) things to be grateful for each night before I go to sleep. It does seem to relax me quicker.

Anything we can do to improve our health and reduce stress is a good thing.

  2. I suffer from chronic depression and anxiety.  Stress affects me greatly and sometimes its difficult to even think of one thing to be grateful for.

Your excellently written article has made a true impact on my thinking.  There are ALWAYS things to be grateful for – even if they are small things.  I think that keeping a gratitude journal is a GREAT idea and could definitely alter a person’s thinking about everything in one’s life.  Re–reading it would help to inculcate this attitude into one’s daily life.

Thank you so very much for writing such a positive and usable article!  I will definitely be starting to do a gratitude journal.  Starting TONIGHT!  Thank you again!

    • I think you will find the journal helpful.  Glad you are starting one.  I have had a journal in the past.  At present, I simply spend a bit of time when I first go to bed, thinking about my day and what I have to be grateful for.  It’s a very nice way to end the day.
