If you want success for your business, you need to make a commitment. You must commit yourself to placing sustained effort or action over a long period of time. In other words, you must consistently follow through with your actions over a period of time, until your goal is achieved.
Therefore, consistency defines your ability to be dependable, reliable and responsible for all the choices, decisions, and actions you make.
If you are consistent, you build small empowering habits that you follow every day to keep you focused on your goal. John Maxwell, famed teacher of leadership, said, “small disciplines repeated with consistence every day lead to great achievements gained slowly over time.
You must, of course, focus on the present moment. However, you must also maintain a long-term view which will tell you if your results are adequate. If you do not focus on your goal consistently, you may fall back on old habits or lose interest. Being consistent becomes the difference between success and failure.
Develop the habit of consistence, but realize it is not about obtaining quick results. Instead, you are on track if you make progress and improvements in small increments over a long period of time.
It is typical that, in order to succeed at anything, you must first commit to taking consistent daily action, even if there is no reward. At first, you must put in the work with very little to show for your efforts. Consistence over time brings rewards.
If you have children, you know how important it is to be consistent. For your children to feel secure, you must not send conflicting or confusing messages. Being a consistent parent can be difficult and exhausting, but it is necessary.
The same is true in business. It is very important that a leader can lead by example. People pay more attention to your actions than to what you say. Here are some things to remember:

As a leader, if you say you are going to do something, you must do it. If you schedule a meeting, you must be there.

The key to consistence can be found in proper preparation and focused attention. Ask yourself, “What goal would I like to achieve?” Then think through the entire process: What steps must you take to reach this goal? Then write down all the parts and outline how you will work through each step. Once you have determined these steps, develop a sense of urgency about reaching each step.
Don’t allow yourself to procrastinate. Avoid distractions and tasks that might divert you from the most important steps you need to make.
Once you have broken your goal down into steps, you must maintain a steady focus. Here are three points of focus you need to keep in mind:
- Focus should be on what is important. Don’t waste your focus on doing what’s fun, easy, or convenient.
- Don’t multitask. Focus on one thing at a time.
- Focus on the actions needed to complete the activity, not on the desired outcome.
To stay focused, take short breaks, just a few minutes, to give yourself a mental rest. Then return to the job at hand.
If you continue to do little things in a small way with consistence, you will notice a big difference over time. However, to gain quicker results, you can take massive action. To avoid burn-out, do such massive actions in short bursts.
You are not striving for perfection here. Rather, you are staying in continuous practice for what you need to do to be successful. By consistently practicing over an extended period of time, you will either reach your goal or master your craft.
Just keep building on the previous day’s work and then look to see where you can learn and improve.
Here are reasons why consistence is a must for building your business:
- Being consistent allows you to measure effectiveness. Without trying something new consistently for a while, you won’t know if it works or not. Give your new venture at least six months before deciding if it is a success or a failure. Sometimes you will need only a minor tweak to make a difference.
- Consistence creates accountability. Make it a priority of being available to your team. If an aspect of business needs attention, establish consistent and recurring meetings to address the issue.
- You establish your reputation with consistence. For a business to grow, it requires a track record of success. You need to adapt the tactics you desire and then stay on course until you achieve your objective.
- With consistence, you are relevant. Relevancy requires a predictable flow of information from you. This allows the business to gain traction for the long haul.
- You maintain your message with consistence. What you do is as important as what you say, as you will serve as a model for your employees. Consistent leadership will become an example that your followers will find inspiring.
Consistence is very valuable. When you make your commitment not to give up, then you must be consistent with your action steps. If you want to reach success, consistence will be an asset, as it will keep you moving forward.
Plan consistent action for each day. Make your plan of what you need to accomplish that day and then carry through with your actions. If you can do this every day, you will make consistent progress toward your goal. Try for quality results, as you will get out of your action what you put in.
Consistency can definitely be the defining factor between failure and success.
